Business
BHP Group Limited, the world's largest mining company by market capitalization, mines and markets copper, iron ore, metallurgical coal, nickel and potash, with operations in Australia, the Americas and other regions; its primary assets include the Escondida and Spence copper mines in Chile, Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold in South Australia, Pilbara iron ore in Western Australia, BMA metallurgical coal in Queensland Australia, Nickel West in Western Australia and the Jansen potash development in Canada. Founded in 1885 as the Broken Hill Proprietary Company at a silver-lead mine in Broken Hill, New South Wales and headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, the company formed through the 2001 merger with Billiton, rebranded to BHP in 2017 and unified its dual-listed structure in 2022. BHP focuses its portfolio on high-quality iron ore and metallurgical coal for steelmaking, copper for electrification and renewables, nickel for batteries and potash for sustainable agriculture, serving steel producers, the energy transition, electronics, construction and fertilizer sectors worldwide. In recent developments, BHP completed the acquisition of Filo Corp. and formed the 50/50 Vicuña joint venture with Lundin Mining in January 2025 to develop the Filo del Sol and Josemaria copper projects in Argentina and Chile; acquired OZ Minerals in 2023 to expand copper assets in Australia; approved Jansen potash Stage 2 in 2023 after Stage 1 investment in 2021 with first production targeted for late 2026 amid some delays; merged its petroleum business with Woodside in 2022; and launched its 2026 BHP Xplor accelerator for critical minerals exploration in September 2025. The company pursues copper growth in South America and Australia, invests in mining truck electrification at Escondida and maintains a strong balance sheet with FY2024 capital expenditure around $10 billion supporting long-life, low-cost assets.
