Business
CSX Corporation, headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, and founded in 1980 through the merger of Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line Industries, operates as a leading Class I railroad providing freight transportation services across North America; through its primary subsidiary CSX Transportation, Inc., the company manages approximately 21,000 route miles of track serving 23 states east of the Mississippi River, the District of Columbia, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, with access to over 70 ocean, river, lake, and port terminals along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, Mississippi River, Great Lakes, and St. Lawrence Seaway. It offers rail-based freight services encompassing merchandise (including chemicals, automotive, forest products, metals and equipment, agriculture, and minerals), intermodal container and trailer transport, coal, trucking, rail-to-truck transload solutions, domestic container shipping, barging, and contract logistics; additionally, CSX engages in real estate sales, leasing, development, and management, while subsidiaries such as Pan Am Railways (acquired in 2022), Quality Carriers (acquired in 2021 for bulk liquid chemicals trucking), Conrail (jointly owned shared assets areas), Winston-Salem Southbound Railway, P&L Transportation, and others support expanded operations in short-line rail, refrigerated services via Fruit Growers Express, and technology through CSX Technology. Recent developments include the 2025 reopening of the expanded $450 million Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore to enable double-stack intermodal trains and boost capacity by 160,000 containers annually; new intermodal partnerships with CN in Nashville for faster rail service and with BNSF across Midwest and Northeast routes; Surface Transportation Board approval for a rail line acquisition establishing direct Class I interchange with Canadian Pacific Kansas City in Alabama to connect Southeast U.S., Texas, and Mexico customers; and leadership transition with Steve Angel succeeding Joseph Hinrichs as president and CEO in September 2025.
