Business
SM Energy Company (SM) is an independent exploration and production company engaged in the acquisition, exploration, development, and production of oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids primarily in the Midland Basin of West Texas, South Texas including the Maverick Basin, and the Uinta Basin of Utah; the company focuses on onshore assets with working interests in high-quality producing wells, leveraging technology and innovation for efficient operations while prioritizing safety, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Founded in 1908 and headquartered in Denver, Colorado, SM Energy maintains field offices in Midland, Texas, and other locations to support its U.S.-centric activities targeting domestic energy security. In recent developments, the company closed its $2.1 billion Uinta Basin acquisitions from XCL Resources and Altamont Energy in October 2024, adding approximately 110 million barrels of oil equivalent in proved reserves and a strategic sand mine asset to bolster its oil-weighted portfolio; additionally, in November 2025, SM Energy announced a transformational all-stock merger with Civitas Resources valued at $12.8 billion, under which each Civitas share exchanges for 1.45 SM shares, creating a combined entity with about 823,000 net acres anchored by Permian assets, enhanced free cash flow exceeding $1.4 billion in pro forma 2025 consensus, and targeted synergies including $70-95 million in annual G&A savings and $30-55 million in cost of capital reductions through divestitures, refinancing, and integration.
