Business
Duolingo, Inc. (DUOL) develops and operates a leading mobile learning platform that offers gamified courses in more than 40 languages including Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese; music; mathematics; and chess, alongside the Duolingo English Test for language certification and Duolingo ABC, a literacy app for young children aged 3-8. The company employs a freemium model with free ad-supported access, premium Super Duolingo subscriptions providing ad-free learning, unlimited attempts and AI-enhanced features, in-app purchases of virtual currency and power-ups, and revenue from its low-cost English proficiency assessments. Founded in 2011 by Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker and headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Duolingo serves users worldwide across more than 100 countries with additional offices in New York City, Seattle, Detroit, Berlin and Beijing. Recent strategic moves include the 2024 acquisitions of Detroit-based animation studios Hobbs and earlier Gunner to bolster in-house creative capabilities following prior partnerships, as well as the acquisition of Berlin-based UberChord to accelerate music learning product development; the company also opened a new office in New York City in 2024 and continues to explore AI partnerships for curriculum enhancements.
