Business
Evergy, Inc. (NYSE: EVRG) generates, transmits, distributes, and sells electricity to approximately 1.7 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers across the western half of Missouri and the eastern half of Kansas. The company provides a diverse portfolio of energy solutions, including reliable baseload power from coal, natural gas, nuclear, and hydroelectric sources; renewable energy generation from wind and solar facilities; advanced smart grid technologies such as automated metering infrastructure covering 95% of its service territory, real-time energy monitoring, and outage detection systems; electric vehicle charging infrastructure; comprehensive energy management services; and customer-facing platforms for personalized notifications and demand response programs. Headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, with administrative offices in Topeka, Kansas, Evergy was formed in 2018 through the merger of Great Plains Energy Incorporated and Westar Energy, Inc., tracing its operational roots to predecessor utilities established as early as 1882. Evergy operates through key regulated utility subsidiaries, including Evergy Missouri West, Evergy Kansas Central, and Evergy Metro, serving its core Midwest markets while focusing on grid modernization, sustainability, and customer reliability. The company maintains a 13.5% ownership interest in Transource Energy, a joint venture with American Electric Power dedicated to developing competitive electric transmission projects nationwide. In recent strategic developments, Evergy invested $2.34 billion in 2024 to upgrade transmission and distribution infrastructure, replace aging assets, and advance sustainability initiatives as part of a broader $17.5 billion capital expenditure plan through 2029, with approximately $6.17 billion allocated to new generation capacity emphasizing renewables. The company announced plans in October 2024 to construct two combined-cycle natural gas plants in Kansas with a combined initial capacity of about 1,410 MW, owned jointly by its Missouri West and Kansas Central subsidiaries, slated for commercial operation in summer 2029 and 2030, respectively, to meet rising demand from economic growth. Evergy's 2024 triennial Integrated Resource Plan projects adding 5,100 MW of wind and solar renewables alongside 6,000 MW of dispatchable firm generation over the next 20 years, driven by increased capacity requirements from the Southwest Power Pool and service-area expansion.
