Business
Albemarle Corporation (NYSE: ALB) is a global specialty chemicals company that develops, manufactures, and markets lithium compounds, bromine, catalysts, and refining catalysts for a wide range of industries including energy storage, transportation, electronics, construction, and petroleum refining. The company offers lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide, lithium chloride, and other lithium specialties used primarily in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems; bromine-based flame retardants, biocides, water treatment chemicals, and clear brine fluids for oil and gas drilling; petroleum refining catalysts such as hydroprocessing catalysts (e.g., Ketjen brand), fluidized catalytic cracking catalysts, and performance catalyst solutions; as well as cesium formate brines and other mineral-based products. Albemarle operates production facilities and conducts business across North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific, serving customers in the mobility, energy transition, and essential chemistries segments. Founded in 1887 and headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, the company maintains strategic joint ventures and subsidiaries worldwide, including its majority ownership in Liontown Resources and partnerships in lithium projects. In recent developments, Albemarle completed the acquisition of a significant stake in Liontown Resources in 2024 to secure lithium supply for its battery-grade products; launched expansions at its lithium conversion facilities in North Carolina and Australia to meet surging demand for EV battery materials; formed a strategic alliance with Stellantis in 2024 for a multi-year offtake agreement covering lithium hydroxide production; and announced operational optimizations including idling its Kemerton facility in Australia amid market conditions while advancing its GreenbusinesstogoTM sustainability initiatives. These moves reflect Albemarle's focus on scaling lithium production capacity to over 1 million tons annually by 2030 and navigating volatile pricing through diversified supply chains and cost efficiencies. The company continues to invest in recycling technologies and downstream processing to support the global energy transition.
