Business
American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK) operates as the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the United States, providing safe, clean, reliable and affordable drinking water and wastewater services to more than 14 million people across approximately 1,700 communities in 14 states and on 18 military installations. The company delivers these services through its regulated state subsidiaries and Military Services Group, which manages long-term contracts with the Department of Defense under the Utilities Privatization program; it operates 80 surface water treatment plants, 520 groundwater treatment plants, 190 wastewater treatment plants, 54,500 miles of transmission, distribution, and collection mains and pipes, 1,200 groundwater wells, 1,800 water and wastewater pumping stations, 1,100 treated water storage facilities, and 75 dams. American Water serves residential, commercial (including food and beverage providers, property developers, and energy suppliers), fire service and private fire, industrial (such as manufacturers, mining, and production operations), public authorities (government buildings, schools, and universities), and other utilities and community water and wastewater systems; it also undertakes contracts with municipal customers to operate and manage water and wastewater facilities, alongside related services like water management solutions for businesses and residential communities. Founded in 1886 as American Water Works & Guarantee Company in Pennsylvania and headquartered in Camden, New Jersey, the company employs approximately 6,700 professionals and maintains regulated operations primarily in the eastern and midwestern United States, including Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia, among others. In May 2025, American Water agreed to acquire multiple water and wastewater systems from Nexus Regulated Utilities, LLC, a subsidiary of Nexus Water Group, Inc., for approximately $315 million, adding nearly 47,000 customer connections in eight existing regulated states, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions expected by August 2026. In October 2025, the company entered into a definitive all-stock merger agreement with Essential Utilities, Inc. (NYSE: WTRG) to create a combined entity valued at $63 billion including debt, with the transaction projected to close in early 2027 pending regulatory approvals, thereby expanding its network by 227 additional water and wastewater treatment plants and positioning American Water shareholders to own about 69% of the pro forma company. These strategic acquisitions align with American Water's core growth strategy, enhancing scale, geographic footprint, and service capabilities for residential, commercial, industrial, and military customers.
