Business
Calavo Growers, Inc. is a global provider of value-added fresh food specializing in the avocado industry. The company operates primarily through two business segments: Grown and Prepared. Its Grown segment includes fresh avocados, tomatoes, and Hawaiian papayas sourced from USDA-certified growers in regions including California, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Chile, and the Dominican Republic. The Prepared segment comprises freshly processed avocado products such as guacamole, salsas, and plant-based dips, marketed under the Calavo brand and private labels to retail grocery, foodservice providers, club stores, mass merchandisers, and food distributors. Calavo operates processing and packaging facilities in the United States and Mexico, including a state-of-the-art production site in Uruapan, Michoacán, that manufactures over 100 proprietary frozen and fresh-refrigerated guacamole flavors using ultra-high-pressure processing technology. Founded in 1924 and headquartered in Santa Paula, California, Calavo maintains a significant market presence in the fresh produce and value-added foods industry worldwide. The company completed the strategic sale of its Fresh Cut business to F&S Fresh Foods in August 2024 for $83 million, refocusing on its core avocado and prepared product lines. In 2025, Calavo announced a $25 million stock repurchase program authorized by its Board of Directors, signaling confidence in its financial position and growth strategy. Calavo also received a non-binding acquisition proposal valued at $32 per share in mid-2025, which remains under review by its Board of Directors. Recently, Calavo reported growth in its Prepared segment with a 40% increase in sales but experienced some challenges in its Fresh segment, including a temporary FDA detention that imposed additional costs. Leadership transitioned with the retirement of CEO Lee Cole and Executive Vice President Mike Browne in late 2025. Calavo’s products primarily serve retail grocery chains, foodservice operators, and wholesale distributors across North America and select international markets. The company is committed to sustainability, food safety, and innovation, providing USDA Certified-Organic Hass avocados and diverse fresh produce offerings year-round. Its geographic operations span the Americas with facilities in the U.S. and Mexico supporting a global supply chain. Calavo’s strategic focus remains on expanding its value-added fresh food offerings and leveraging its market leadership in avocados and guacamole to drive growth and shareholder value. This comprehensive profile reflects Calavo Growers, Inc.'s operations, core products, recent strategic changes, and market positioning as of late 2025.
