Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE: DUK), headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina and tracing its origins to 1904, operates as one of America's largest energy holding companies, serving 8.2 million electric customers across North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky with approximately 50,000 megawatts of owned generation capacity from coal, natural gas, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar, wind and other renewables; its gas utilities deliver natural gas to 1.6 million customers in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio and Kentucky through regulated distribution, pipeline transmission and storage infrastructure; the commercial renewables segment develops, owns and operates wind farms, solar projects, battery storage and fuel cell facilities serving utilities, cooperatives, municipalities and corporate off-takers across 22 states. The Electric Utilities and Infrastructure segment generates, transmits, distributes and sells electricity to residential, commercial and industrial customers as well as wholesale entities; the Gas Utilities and Infrastructure segment provides natural gas distribution and invests in renewable natural gas initiatives; Duke employs about 27,600 people and focuses on grid modernization, clean energy transition targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and reliability enhancements amid growing demand. In August 2025, Duke Energy partnered with Brookfield, which acquired a 19.7% indirect non-controlling equity interest in Duke Energy Florida for $6 billion in cash to fund an expanded $87 billion five-year capital plan and strengthen the balance sheet while retaining operational control; in July 2025, the company announced the sale of its Tennessee Piedmont Natural Gas business to Spire Inc. for $1.425 billion, expected to close in Q1 2026, to streamline its gas portfolio and support capital investments.
