The company operates through three segments: Commercial Products (opioid reversal agents and related offerings), Medical Countermeasures (MCM) Products (anthrax, smallpox, botulism, Ebola and other biothreat solutions procured primarily by governments) and Services (contract development and manufacturing for biopharma partners). Founded in 1998 as BioPort Inc. through acquisition of Michigan Biologic Products Institute and renamed Emergent BioSolutions in 2004, it maintains headquarters in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with manufacturing facilities including sites in Baltimore, Maryland; Lansing, Michigan; and Bayview, Maryland; it serves civilian, military and government customers globally, with key markets in the United States, Canada and international public health agencies. Recent developments include an October 2025 investment agreement and strategic partnership with RocketVax Ltd. to lead U.S. manufacturing and commercialization of four next-generation vaccine candidates for infectious diseases, cancer and autoimmune disorders (one backed by a U.S. National Institutes of Health Project NextGen letter of intent); eleven U.S. government MCM contract modifications and product orders secured in 2025 totaling hundreds of millions of dollars for products including CYFENDUS, ACAM2000, VIGIV and BAT; a $65 million multi-year contract with the Ontario Ministry of Health for NARCAN Nasal Spray; approximately $550 million in additional MCM contract modifications; repayment of $168 million in debt and a new $250 million term loan to bolster financial position; completion of the $30 million sale of its Baltimore-Camden manufacturing site to Bora Pharmaceuticals in August 2024 as part of a multi-year transformation plan involving cost savings of $80 million annually through workforce reductions and facility closures; and divestiture of RSDL (Reactive Skin Decontaminant Lotion) to SERB Pharmaceuticals for $75 million in July 2024.
