Business
Knife River Corporation (NYSE: KNF) supplies aggregates-based construction materials and contracting services across 14 states in the western, central, and southern United States. Founded in 1917 and headquartered in Bismarck, North Dakota, the company mines, processes, and sells construction aggregates such as crushed stone, sand, and gravel; produces and sells ready-mix concrete, asphalt mixes, and liquid asphalt for road construction; and offers contracting services including heavy-civil construction, asphalt and concrete paving, site development, grading, demolition, and excavating. It also provides specialized products and services like precast/prestressed concrete and cement to public- and private-sector customers, including federal, state, and municipal governments, as well as industrial, commercial, residential developers, and other private parties, with operations segmented into Pacific, Northwest, Mountain, Central, and Energy Services regions. The company operates over 75 aggregate locations in select markets, employs approximately 5,700 people at peak season, and focuses on vertically integrated solutions for highways, local roads, bridges, airport runways, and public infrastructure projects. Knife River separated from MDU Resources Group in 2023 to become an independent, publicly traded entity and continues to expand through strategic acquisitions aligned with its Competitive EDGE growth plan. In March 2025, it completed the $454 million acquisition of Strata Corporation, an aggregates-led provider in North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota with over 900 employees, enhancing its Central Region footprint, aggregate reserves, and EBITDA margins. Through November 2024, Knife River deployed $129.3 million on six additional acquisitions focused on aggregates and construction materials at 6-8 times projected 2025 EBITDA multiples, and in March 2025 amended its credit agreement for $1.265 billion in senior secured facilities, including a $500 million Term Loan B, to support the Strata deal and further growth.
