Business
Leggett & Platt, Incorporated (NYSE: LEG) manufactures engineered components and products that enhance comfort in bedding, furniture, automotive seating, flooring, and specialized applications worldwide. The company, founded in 1883 and headquartered in Carthage, Missouri, operates through three main segments: Bedding Products, which supplies steel rods, drawn wires, innersprings, specialty foams, private-label finished mattresses, ready-to-assemble foundations, adjustable beds, and machinery including industrial sewing, quilting, packaging, and glue-drying equipment to bedding manufacturers, e-commerce retailers, big-box stores, and department stores; Furniture, Flooring & Textile Products, which provides motion mechanisms, seating and table components, decorative hardware, carpet cushioning, resilient and hard-surface flooring underlayment for residential and commercial furniture makers and construction; and Specialized Products, which offers lumbar support systems, seat suspensions, motors, actuators, control cables for automotive OEMs, tubing assemblies for aerospace, and hydraulic cylinders for material handling and construction, alongside drawn steel wire and industrial automation equipment. Geographically, Leggett & Platt maintains manufacturing and distribution facilities across the United States, Europe, Asia, and other regions, serving diverse customers from major OEMs to retailers and industrial users. Recent developments include the August 2025 divestiture of its Aerospace Products group to Tinicum Inc.-affiliated entities for $285 million in gross proceeds (approximately $250 million after-tax), supporting ongoing restructuring to streamline operations and reduce debt; advancement of restructuring initiatives such as divestment of a small U.S. bedding machinery business, sale of properties, completion of Specialty Foam consolidation, and Phase 2 of Flooring Products optimization, which improved Q2 2025 margins despite sales declines; raised 2025 guidance to sales of $3.9-$4.2 billion (later $4.0-$4.1 billion) and adjusted EPS of $1.52-$1.72 with EBIT margins of 8.4%-9.0%; and a December 2025 non-binding acquisition proposal from Somnigroup International (NYSE: SGI) in an all-stock deal valued at around $1.6 billion, representing a 30.3% premium to LEG's 30-day average share price, under which Leggett & Platt would operate independently while enabling tax-deferred shareholder participation in the combined entity's growth.
