Business
NorthWestern Energy Group Inc., operating as NorthWestern Energy, delivers essential electricity and natural gas services to a diverse customer base, including residential, commercial, and industrial clients across Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Yellowstone National Park. The company’s operations are bifurcated into distinct Electric and Natural Gas segments. Within its electric division, NorthWestern is actively involved in the generation, procurement, transmission, and distribution of electricity, drawing on a diverse portfolio that includes hydro, wind, solar, natural gas, and coal-fired resources. The natural gas segment encompasses the production, acquisition, storage, transmission, and ultimate delivery of natural gas, further bolstered by local municipal service franchises. As of recent reporting, NorthWestern Energy serves approximately 787,000 customers. Its extensive infrastructure in Montana features roughly 6,596 miles of electric transmission lines and 18,794 miles of electric distribution lines, supported by nearly 396 substations. For natural gas, Montana hosts about 2,133 miles of transmission and 5,221 miles of distribution pipelines. In South Dakota, the company manages around 1,349 miles of electric transmission and 2,386 miles of electric distribution lines, alongside approximately 55 miles of natural gas transmission and 1,796 miles of natural gas distribution lines. Nebraska’s infrastructure includes about 830 miles of natural gas distribution lines. Founded in 1923, and headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, NorthWestern Energy is committed to a balanced approach of reliability, affordability, and sustainability. The company aims to achieve net-zero carbon and methane emissions by 2050, with 58% of its electric generation already carbon-free as of 2024. Recent strategic initiatives include the October 2024 commissioning of the 175-megawatt Yellowstone County Generating Station and the acquisition of Energy West’s Montana natural gas system in July 2025, adding 33,000 customers. Looking ahead, NorthWestern Energy announced in August 2025 a definitive agreement for an all-stock merger with Black Hills Corporation. This combination is projected to create a premier regional utility with a pro forma market capitalization of approximately $7.8 billion and a combined enterprise value of $15.4 billion, expanding services to roughly 2.1 million customers across eight states upon completion. NorthWestern Energy's CEO, Brian Bird, is slated to lead the newly formed entity.
