Business
Orion S.A. engages in the manufacture and sale of carbon black products, operating through two primary segments: Specialty Carbon Black and Rubber Carbon Black. The Specialty Carbon Black segment produces post-treated specialty carbon black grades for coatings and printing applications, high purity carbon blacks for the fiber industry, and conductive carbon blacks for use in batteries, polymers, and coatings. The Rubber Carbon Black segment supplies high-reinforcing and semi-reinforcing grades primarily for tire manufacturing under the ECORAX brand, as well as products for mechanical rubber goods used in automotive production, construction, food, consumer, and medical applications. The company operates globally with manufacturing plants and regional headquarters in the United States, Brazil, Europe (Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey, France), South Africa, China, South Korea, and other parts of Asia. Founded in 1862 and headquartered in Senningerberg, Luxembourg, Orion S.A. was formerly known as Orion Engineered Carbons S.A. until a name change in June 2023. The company has advanced its strategic focus on sustainability and specialty growth, including the launch of a bio-circular carbon black product, ECOLAR 50 POWDER, designed to meet increasing industry demands for sustainable coatings. It has also announced a significant investment of $120 million to $140 million in a new acetylene-based conductive additives plant in Texas, expected to increase capacity notably by 12 kilotons per year and support the lithium-ion battery market. In recent years, Orion expanded its geographic footprint and production capacity, including acquiring Evonik and DEG's stakes in Qingdao Evonik Chemical Co. in China to strengthen its presence in the important APAC region. It opened a new greenfield carbon black plant in Huaibei, China, to better serve the growing Asian market and redeploy production lines in the U.S. and Europe to enhance supply efficiency. The company also continues to innovate with new conductive carbon black grades such as XPB 412, XPB 538, and XPB 545, targeting advanced conductive applications. Orion S.A. serves a diverse customer base across specialty chemicals, materials, and rubber industries globally, operating 15 manufacturing plants and innovation centers on three continents. Its recent 2024 strategic initiatives emphasize sustainability, circular economy solutions, and capacity expansion, positioning it to meet increasing market demand with innovative, high-performance carbon black products and solutions. The leadership team is focused on leveraging these developments to enhance long-term profitability and market position.
