Business
Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) manufactures and sells containerboard and uncoated freesheet paper products primarily in North America. The company operates through two main segments: Packaging and Paper. PCA’s product portfolio includes containerboard, corrugated packaging products, and uncoated freesheet paper used for various packaging applications. Its packaging products are designed and manufactured across approximately 85 corrugated converting plants and seven containerboard mills, serving a diverse customer base in multiple industries. PCA is the third-largest producer of containerboard and uncoated freesheet in the United States and North America. Founded in 1959, the company is headquartered in Lake Forest, Illinois, and employs around 15,400 people. Recent major changes include PCA’s acquisition of Greif Inc.’s containerboard business in a $1.8 billion cash transaction completed in 2025. This acquisition added multiple containerboard mills and corrugated facilities to PCA’s operations, enhancing its recycled product capabilities and increasing its containerboard production capacity. PCA also announced a strategic reconfiguration of its Wallula, Washington mill, transitioning to a single-machine recycled mill, which is expected to reduce costs and result in approximately $205 million in pre-tax restructuring charges spread over late 2025 and early 2026. The company is investing in over 30 strategic projects across its box plants to enhance operational efficiency and product quality. Additionally, PCA is advancing sustainability efforts, including a carbon capture and storage pilot project aimed at reducing biogenic CO2 emissions in its operations. PCA’s operations focus on delivering integrated corrugated packaging and paper solutions shaped by its vertical integration strategy, controlling the entire production process from raw materials to finished packaging products. The company serves markets across North America with a strong emphasis on sustainability, operational excellence, and innovation to meet evolving customer demands, including growth driven by e-commerce. Its strategic investments and acquisitions support capacity expansion, product quality improvement, and sustainable packaging development, positioning PCA as a leading supplier in the containerboard and corrugated packaging industry. This comprehensive operational footprint and recent strategic expansions reinforce Packaging Corporation of America’s position as a major player in the packaging and paper sectors with a broad geographic and product reach centered in the United States.
