Business
Photronics, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLAB) manufactures and sells photomasks, which are high-precision photographic quartz or glass plates containing microscopic images of electronic circuits used as masters to transfer circuit patterns onto semiconductor wafers and flat panel display substrates during fabrication of integrated circuits, a variety of flat panel displays, and other electrical and optical components; its core products include production-proven binary photomasks and reticles, advanced photomasks such as binary masks with optical proximity correction, phase shift masks, and special purpose masks like optical gratings, as well as large-area masks designed for flat panel displays including LCD and OLED technologies, and specialty photomasks for micro-electromechanical systems, microfluidics, and other microelectronic applications. The company serves semiconductor and flat panel display designers, manufacturers, and foundries, as well as high-performance electronics producers, through sales personnel and customer service representatives. Photronics operates approximately 11 manufacturing facilities across Asia (Taiwan, China, Korea), North America (United States), and Europe. Founded in 1969 as Photronic Labs, Inc. in Danbury, Connecticut by Constantine Macricostas and renamed Photronics, Inc. in 1990, the company is headquartered in Brookfield, Connecticut. In recent developments, Photronics installed the first merchant multi-beam mask writer in the United States at its Boise, Idaho facility in August 2025, enhancing production speed and enabling complex curvilinear integrated circuit mask designs for advanced EUV and nanoimprint applications to support U.S. government trusted and commercial photomask needs. The company underwent a leadership transition in May 2025, with Dr. Frank Lee stepping down as CEO to become Chairman and President of its Taiwan-based PDMC subsidiary in preparation for retirement, while George C. Macricostas assumed the CEO role alongside his Chairman position; Macricostas was later appointed Executive Chairman effective January 6, 2025. Photronics expanded operations with two new facilities in China, repurchased approximately $72 million in shares during Q2 fiscal 2025 and an additional $97.4 million over the first nine months ended August 3, 2025, and maintains strategic collaborations such as with IBM on 2nm EUV photomasks amid growing demand for high-end IC and node migrations.
