Business
Rio Tinto Group operates as a British-Australian multinational mining company that discovers, mines, and processes mineral resources. The company produces iron ore from its Pilbara operations in Western Australia; aluminium including bauxite, alumina, and primary aluminium; copper and associated by-products such as gold, silver, molybdenum, and sulphuric acid; diamonds; and energy and minerals encompassing uranium, borates, titanium dioxide, lithium, salt, and industrial minerals. Rio Tinto serves global markets including the steel industry, transportation, construction, packaging, agriculture, and battery technologies, with major operations across 35 countries such as Australia, Canada, the United States, Chile, and South Africa. Founded in 1873 and headquartered in London, United Kingdom, the company maintains a dual-listed structure with Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited. In recent developments, Rio Tinto completed the $6.7 billion acquisition of Arcadium Lithium in 2025 to strengthen its lithium position; formed partnerships with Chile's Codelco and ENAMI for the Salar de Maricunga and Salares Altoandinos lithium projects; partnered with Canada Growth Fund to advance scandium oxide production in Canada; and shifted focus to hydrogen-based iron reduction while cancelling its biomass pilot program.
