Business
Sonic Automotive, Inc. (NYSE: SAH) operates as one of the largest automotive retailers in the United States, conducting business through three primary segments: Franchised Dealerships, EchoPark, and Powersports. The Franchised Dealerships segment sells new and used cars and light trucks representing over 25 brands, primarily luxury and import marques including Jaguar Land Rover, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus, and Toyota; provides vehicle maintenance, manufacturer warranty repairs, paint and collision repair services; sells replacement parts; and arranges third-party financing, extended warranties, service contracts, insurance, and other aftermarket products. The EchoPark segment focuses exclusively on pre-owned vehicles, primarily cars and light trucks aged one to four years with existing warranty coverage, employing an ultra-low pricing strategy and simplified purchase process at specialty retail locations; while the Powersports segment sells new and used powersports vehicles such as motorcycles, personal watercraft, and all-terrain vehicles, alongside fixed operations services, parts, and third-party finance and insurance. Incorporated in 1997 and headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Fortune 500 company maintains over 100 franchised dealerships, more than 40 EchoPark locations, and powersports franchises across 24 states in major metropolitan markets, targeting retail consumers with comprehensive automotive ownership solutions. Recent strategic expansions include multiple acquisitions strengthening its luxury portfolio, notably becoming the largest Jaguar Land Rover retailer in the U.S. by volume through the July 2025 purchase of four California dealerships from US Auto Trust (Jaguar Land Rover Los Angeles, Newport Beach, San Jose, and Land Rover Pasadena, adding approximately $500 million in annual revenue) and the August 2025 acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover Santa Monica, bringing its total Jaguar Land Rover stores to 11; alongside powersports growth highlighted by record sales at the 85th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 2025 and the opening of a new Sturgis Harley-Davidson dealership in historic downtown Sturgis, South Dakota.
