Business
Shapeways Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:SHPW) provides digital manufacturing services, specializing in 3D printing, additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping, and related solutions for industries including robotics, drones, medtech, electronics, defense, aerospace, consumer goods, architecture, gaming, education, and jewelry; its core offerings encompass an end-to-end platform for transforming digital designs into physical products using over 90 materials and finishes such as Nylon 12 (PA12 via SLS), Accura 60 (SLA), and Stainless Steel 316L (binder jetting), alongside services like CNC machining, injection molding, urethane and vacuum casting, sheet metal fabrication, machine tooling, design optimization via partnership with ZVerse, and e-commerce integrations with Shopify and Etsy. The company operates from its primary manufacturing hub in Eindhoven, Netherlands, with historical facilities in New York, serving customers in over 180 countries through ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 certified processes. Founded in 2007 as part of Royal Philips Electronics in Eindhoven by co-founders Robert Schouwenburg, Marleen Vogelaar, and Peter Weijmarshausen, it relocated headquarters to New York in 2010 and went public via SPAC merger in 2021. In July 2024, Shapeways Holdings, Inc. and affiliates filed for voluntary Chapter 7 liquidation in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, leading to the sale of U.S. production facilities and physical assets to third parties, divestiture of its OTTO and MFG business units prior to bankruptcy, and loss of marketplace data, user IP, and prior customer accounts due to trustee-mandated data wiping. Subsequently, in August 2024, a management team comprising original co-founders Marleen Vogelaar (CEO), Robert Schouwenburg (CTO), and long-tenured executives Jules Witte (COO), Job van de Laar (Plant Manager), and Tiago São José (Head of Engineering) acquired the profitable European assets of Shapeways BV via Manuevo BV (a WVS International Inc. subsidiary), revived operations from the Eindhoven facility, and in December 2024 secured the Shapeways brand, website, and available intellectual property from bankruptcy trustees to relaunch as a customer-focused B2B digital manufacturing provider. This reorganization shifts emphasis to sustainable, high-quality on-demand production without minimum order quantities, prioritizing prototyping, low-volume runs, and industrial applications while planning future marketplace restoration.
