Business
United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) is an integrated steel producer that manufactures flat-rolled and tubular steel products; value-added steel sheet products including advanced high-strength steels; and tubular products for the automotive, appliance, container, construction, industrial machinery, oil and gas, and energy industries. Operations include iron ore mining, coke production, and steelmaking facilities utilizing blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace and electric arc furnace technologies, with production sites across the United States including Gary Works in Indiana, Great Lakes Works in Michigan, and Big River Steel in Arkansas; facilities in Canada; and a major plant in Kosice, Slovakia. Founded in 1901 and headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the company pursues its Best for All strategy to develop next-generation sustainable steels such as verdeX steel, leveraging both integrated and mini-mill capabilities for lower-carbon production. In June 2025, U.S. Steel finalized a historic partnership with Nippon Steel Corporation, under which Nippon Steel acquired the company while retaining its name, U.S. headquarters, and commitment to domestic steelmaking under a national security agreement with the U.S. government. The partnership includes over $14 billion in planned U.S. investments for facility upgrades, such as a slag recycler near Pittsburgh and hot strip mill enhancements in Gary, Indiana, alongside more than 200 operational efficiency initiatives drawing on Nippon Steel's technologies. This alliance, supported by President Trump's administration, aims to protect over 100,000 jobs across states including Pennsylvania, Indiana, Arkansas, Minnesota, and Alabama, while advancing U.S. Steel's capabilities in sustainable and innovative steel products.
